Home surveillance

A year or two ago my father-in-law asked me to set-up some sort video surveillance on is acreage (6 approx.) out in the boonies, as usual, his and my budget was very limited, but I learned some things a long the way, so I’ll share what I know…now..I’m not saying this is the best way, or the least expensive way to do this sort of thing, but it is the way I did it!

Here is a quick overview:

  • Cameras – Foscam (and knock-offs), low cost CCTV, web cams
  • Recording software used – BlueIris, extremely good, can’t say enough good things about this, tried many of the other solutions (including Zoneminder, which I had used in the past, but felt a Windows based solution was easier for my father-in-law to use) , this was a keeper
  • Running on XP SP+3 built using nlite to remove all the unused crap, got XP down to around 200MB, it has been very very reliable, and thrifty on resources
  • Tips & trciks with Foscam IP cameras
  • Virtualizing BlueIris
